Joshua 5:13
Don't you wonder what made Joshua so bold to approach the man with the drawn sword? He could be killed. He did not even think twice to approach the man and ask.
I admire Joshua's courage. He simply take to heart what God had promised him. (Joshua 1:9) None would stand against Joshua all the days of his life.
When the promise came from God, you better believe it. God can never lie. What God said He would do, He would do. Any other 'promisee' cannot be trusted unless otherwise proven faithful. (Besides, humans are self-serving and only want things for their own good. God is never like that.)
Anyways, all the great men (and women) of faith in the Bible had one thing in common. They have faith in the One who promises.
Joshua 5:14
Without realizing it Joshua was face to face with the commander of God's army. When Joshua realized the man was from God, his 'courage' turned to 'reverence'. Joshua knew God must have a message for him.
Joshua 5:15
The message God had for Joshua: 'Take off your sandals you're standing on holy ground.'
Amazing right? (The same message that Moises got when he came nearer to the burning bush.)
For me, what it reveals is that before God 'will make the promise come true' (or when your whole being finally embrace God's calling and purpose) for your life you have to acknowledge that He is a Holy God and He alone deserves your worship. Stepping in to your calling and purpose also means you would no longer live to give honor to yourself, but, to God.
After Joshua obeyed the order of the commander of God's army, God gave him the 'strategy' to conquer Jericho. 'Godly foolproof strategy' can only come after heartfelt consecration and worship to God. Any strategy obtained from human effort is merely human strategy.
When God is honored by your actions, there is no stopping God from mightily moving in and through your life. No matter how long you may have waited to take on the lead. Joshua waited 40 years. Faithfully and obediently waited all those years.
Child of God, did God promise you something great? Wait until God make it happen. Yet, be careful that while you're waiting your heart worship God alone. It's the only way to get to your promise land. Worship God alone. No idols. No false gods. No rebellion.
Child of God, wait on God and He will do much more than what you expected.
