In the times of the prophet Elijah, Ahab and Jezebel worshiped false gods - Baals and Asherah. The whole nation of Israel was deceived to do the same. Why they were enticed? They believed that these false gods gave them rain. They also believed that it gave them power of some kind over other people and situations. So, to turn the minds of those people back to God, Elijah prayed to God for drought. AND God answered Elijah's prayer. Yet, those people did not turn back to God. They continued to waver between two opinions, they still worshiped the Baals/Asherah. Until Elijah dared the prophets/prophetesses of Baals and Asherah to a power encounter. And GOD answered Elijah's prayer.
In Jesus' time, he forbade his disciples to call down rain of fire to destroy those who rejected him. Jesus wants to give light to the people oppressed by the kingdom of darkness. Jesus came on earth to save souls and not destroy them. Yet, not all souls belong to Jesus. These are stiff-necked people filled by all kinds of evil and selfish desires. God is offering them salvation, but, they return harm for the good offered to them. Jesus said that we should just let GOD Himself deal with them.
James 2:19 You believe there is one God - even demons believe in that and shudder.

LORD GOD, answer your servant's request. You know all they have done and all they continue to do. Bring an end to their wickedness and cast out of them and out of their horses/equipment all the source of power they relied on. Deal with them now as You said You would. Let them feel the surpassing power and all authority that You gave to Your Son Jesus Christ. In that way, some of them may turn back to You and give You the honor and respect due You. All for Your glory and in Jesus name.
